Puppetry + Backstage Skills

Behind the Curtain: Puppetry & Backstage Skills

Step behind the curtain and discover the magic that brings a performance to life!

This neurodiversity-affirming class is designed for neurodivergent individuals who are interested in puppetry, theatre production, and creative collaboration. Participants will explore the fundamentals of puppet performance while also learning essential backstage skills such as prop handling, set organization, sound cues, scene transitions, and working as part of a production team.

Through hands-on activities, structured routines, and supportive instruction, participants will have opportunities to build communication, confidence, problem-solving, motor coordination, and teamwork skills in a fun and welcoming environment.

Class activities may include:

  • Creating and bringing puppet characters to life
  • Practicing puppet movement, expression, and voice
  • Learning how to prepare props and backstage materials
  • Exploring sound, and scene-change cues
  • Working together to rehearse short performances
  • Discovering different theatre roles based on individual strengths and interests

No previous theatre or puppetry experience is required. Participants may communicate, engage, and participate in the ways that feel most comfortable for them. The focus is on creativity, connection, and celebrating every person’s unique contribution to the production.

At the end of the session, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their puppetry and backstage skills in a supportive group performance.
